Chemical manufacturers in India: a guide for foreign buyers
India produces a wide range of chemicals, from specialty chemicals and dyes to APIs and intermediates, with a deep base of plants that already export. Availability is rarely the problem: choosing and checking the right supplier is. This guide is part of contract manufacturing in India.
In short
- India supplies specialty chemicals, agrochemicals, dyes and pigments, APIs and intermediates.
- Production sits in clusters in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
- Check the site, GMP status, regulatory filings, certificate of analysis and a sample before ordering.
- Compare quotes on the same specification, volume and Incoterm.

What India produces well
- Specialty chemicals: surfactants, additives, coating raw materials, personal care ingredients, performance intermediates. Many suppliers are mid-size firms with flexible plants and application labs.
- Agrochemicals: technical grade actives and formulations. Export plants often hold registrations in several markets, which you can verify.
- Dyes and pigments: reactive, disperse and vat dyes, organic pigments, a long-established export segment.
- APIs and intermediates: from mature off-patent molecules to newer products. Intermediates are often an easier first step, with a lighter regulatory burden.
- Contract manufacturing: custom synthesis, toll manufacturing and scale-up, for a specific route or a private-label product.
Where chemical and pharma manufacturers are in India
| Region | Main strengths |
|---|---|
| Gujarat (Ankleshwar, Bharuch, Dahej, Vapi, Ahmedabad) | Specialty chemicals, dyes and pigments, intermediates |
| Maharashtra (Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Tarapur) | Specialty chemicals, pharma, trading hubs |
| Telangana (Hyderabad) | APIs, intermediates, pharma |
| Andhra Pradesh (Visakhapatnam) | APIs, intermediates, bulk chemicals |
| Tamil Nadu (Chennai, Cuddalore) | Pharma, specialty chemicals |
How to check a chemical or API supplier
- Site audit: reactors, storage, quality control lab and waste handling. A sales office is not a plant.
- GMP status: for pharma and nutraceutical inputs, the certificate, its scope and its expiry date.
- Regulatory history: US FDA registration and inspections for US-bound products, EU GMP for Europe, WHO-GMP for many other markets.
- Certificate of analysis: batch number, test methods and specifications, compared with your own specification.
- REACH, EU and UK separately: since Brexit, EU REACH and UK REACH are two regimes. An Indian maker usually registers through an only representative based in each market. Confirm who holds the registration and that your volume is covered.
- Sample testing: in your own lab or an independent one, before you approve a batch.
Keep a written record of each check: it helps with internal approval and with regulators.
What drives the price
- Raw materials: many intermediates follow petrochemical and mineral feedstock markets.
- Batch size and specification: small batches and tight specifications cost more per kilogram.
- Packaging and documentation: export packaging, certificates and regulatory files.
- Compliance: GMP plants and registered products carry higher overheads.
- Logistics: freight, insurance and port handling, plus hazardous goods rules where they apply.
A lower quote may leave out testing, documents or freight: compare on the same basis.

Questions about chemical manufacturers in India
How do I find a reliable chemical manufacturer in India?
Start from a shortlist of plants that already export your chemistry, then check the documents, audit the site and test samples before any order.
Do Indian suppliers meet EU and UK requirements?
Many do. Confirm the REACH status for your substance in each market: EU REACH and UK REACH are separate since Brexit. For pharma inputs, check EU GMP or the relevant inspection history.
Can I start with a small order?
Yes. A trial batch is common and lets you test quality, documents and logistics before you commit to volume.
How long does sourcing take?
It depends on the product and the compliance work. Allow several weeks to a few months for checks, samples and a first shipment.
