  • The Indian rate applies only if the goods qualify as Indian origin under the EU GSP rules and the exporter is registered in the REX system.
  • Import VAT depends on the EU country of import and is usually recoverable if your company is VAT-registered, so the duty is the real cost difference.
  • Check the exact code with your customs broker: the right code decides the rate.

In short

  • The India-EU trade deal is concluded but not yet in force: entry into force is expected in 2027 at the earliest.
  • Today, the EU GSP already lowers the duty on many Indian products, for example 9.6% instead of 12% on cotton T-shirts.
  • The same goods from China pay the standard EU rate, and sometimes anti-dumping duty.

Standard EU rate for goods made in China, and the rate for goods made in India under the EU GSP, read from Access2Markets (European Commission) on 2026-10-28. Click a product to see the detail and your yearly difference.

The Indian rate requires Indian origin under the GSP rules and an exporter registered in REX. Rates change: the calculator above reads them live.

Where the India-EU trade deal stands

  • Concluded: the EU and India concluded the negotiations in January 2026.
  • Next step: the European Commission asked the Council in September 2026 to authorise the signature. Signature is expected at the end of 2026.
  • In force: expected in 2027 at the earliest, once the EU and India have approved it.

Until then, nothing changes at EU customs: Indian goods pay the GSP rate where it applies, or the standard rate. Once the deal applies, the calculator will read the new rates from the European Commission like the current ones.

Why Indian goods can already pay less than Chinese goods

India is a beneficiary of the EU's Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP). For many products, it cuts the standard EU duty: on clothing, home textiles, footwear and shrimp, the gap with China is often several points of the customs value. China is not a GSP beneficiary.

Some Indian sectors are excluded from the GSP, and some products have no duty at all. That is why the answer depends on your exact code. The GSP rate needs Indian origin under the GSP rules and an exporter registered in the REX system: a real manufacturer, not a trader reselling goods made elsewhere.

How EU import duty is calculated

  • Commodity code: the first 8 digits (Combined Nomenclature) set the standard duty rate, the same in every EU country.
  • Customs value: in most cases the price of the goods plus shipping and insurance up to the EU border.
  • Origin: the rate depends on where the goods are made, not where they are shipped from.
  • Import VAT: set by the EU country of import and usually recoverable for a VAT-registered company, so the duty is the real cost difference.

Questions about the India-EU trade deal

Is the India-EU trade deal in force?

Not yet. Negotiations were concluded in January 2026. Signature is expected at the end of 2026 and entry into force is expected in 2027 at the earliest, after approval by the EU and India.

Do Indian goods pay less EU duty than Chinese goods today?

On many products, yes. India benefits from the EU GSP, which lowers the duty on products such as clothing, footwear and shrimp. China does not. On other products, both pay the same standard EU rate. The calculator shows your exact case.

What does an Indian exporter need for the GSP rate?

The goods must qualify as originating in India under the GSP rules, and the exporter must be registered in the REX system and give a statement on origin. Ask your supplier before the first shipment.

Will the trade deal remove all duties on Indian goods?

The agreement is expected to cut or remove EU duties on many Indian products, product by product and sometimes over several years. The exact rates apply only once it is in force: the calculator will show them as soon as the European Commission publishes them.

Where does the data come from?

From Access2Markets, the European Commission’s trade portal, read live when you search. The EU customs tariff is the same in every EU country. Always confirm the code with your customs broker.
