Clothing manufacturers in India: a guide for foreign brands

India is one of the world's largest apparel producers, strong in cotton, knitwear, denim, embroidery and printed fabrics, and often open to smaller runs than large Asian factories. The hard part is finding a real factory suited to your product and volumes. This guide is part of contract manufacturing in India.

In short

  • Each garment type has its cluster: Tirupur for knitwear, Bengaluru for woven and denim, Jaipur for prints.
  • Smaller workshops often accept a few hundred pieces per style.
  • Ask for certificates that match your claims, and confirm them with the issuer.
  • Never skip the pre-production sample and an inspection before shipment.

The usual sampling and production steps

A complete tech pack (measurements, fabrics, trims, labels, packaging) saves weeks of back and forth. Approve the pre-production sample in writing: it becomes the reference for bulk and for inspection.

How to check a clothing factory

  • A factory, not a trader: visit, or have someone visit, the production floor that will sew your order.
  • Similar products: ask for garments they already make for foreign brands, in your category.
  • Certificates: confirmed with the body that issued them, not a PDF.
  • Capacity: lines and workers available in your season, not only at quotation time.
  • Communication: one named contact who answers technical questions in clear English.

Private label clothing manufacturers in India

Most export factories in India make private label clothing: your designs, your fabrics, your labels, hang tags and packaging. Some also offer their own base styles that you customise, which lowers the minimum order for a first collection.

  • Full private label: your tech pack, made to your specification.
  • Customised base styles: the factory's patterns, your fabric, colours and branding.
  • Protect your designs: a confidentiality agreement and your trademark registered.

What drives the price of a garment

  • Fabric, often the largest part of the cost: composition, weight, dyeing and finishing.
  • Construction: number of operations, embroidery, prints, washes.
  • Quantity per style and colour: smaller runs cost more per piece.
  • Trims, labels and packaging.
  • Freight and import duties in your market, which depend on your product code and trade agreements.

Questions about clothing manufacturers in India

What is the minimum order with Indian clothing manufacturers?

It depends on the factory and the garment. Smaller workshops often accept a few hundred pieces per style, while large exporters ask for much more. Embroidery, prints and custom fabrics can raise the minimum.

How long does production take?

Sampling often takes a few weeks, then bulk production several more, depending on fabric, quantity and season. Ask for a written timeline with each sample stage and the bulk delivery date.

Which certifications should I ask for?

It depends on your market and claims: GOTS for organic cotton, OEKO-TEX for tested textiles, and social audits such as BSCI, SMETA or WRAP for working conditions. Confirm each certificate with the body that issued it.

Can I produce under my own brand?

Yes. Most export factories make private label clothing with your labels, tags and packaging. Protect your designs with a confidentiality agreement and register your trademark.
