Electronics manufacturing in India: a guide for foreign buyers
India assembles a growing range of electronics for export, from control boards to solar modules, through electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers. The result depends on how carefully you check the partner and plan your components, many of which are still imported. This guide is part of contract manufacturing in India.
In short
- Indian EMS providers handle PCB assembly, box build, cable harnesses, testing and solar modules.
- The main clusters are Noida, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Gujarat for solar.
- Many components are still imported: your bill of materials drives lead time and cost.
- Check SMT lines, inspection equipment, quality systems and traceability before you commit.

Contents
What Indian EMS providers do
- PCB assembly: surface mount and through-hole lines, often mixed-technology boards.
- Box build: full unit assembly, enclosure, wiring and final packaging.
- Cable harnesses: cut, crimp and test of wire assemblies to your drawing.
- Testing: in-circuit, functional and burn-in tests, depending on the product.
- Solar modules: cell stringing, lamination and framing in dedicated plants.
An electronics contract manufacturer may cover all of these or only some: ask what is done in-house and what is subcontracted.
Where electronics are made in India
- Noida and Greater Noida
- Consumer electronics and mobile assembly, many component vendors nearby
- Chennai and Sriperumbudur
- Automotive electronics, telecom equipment, contract assembly, close to a port
- Bengaluru
- Engineering talent, low to mid volume builds with design support
- Pune
- Automotive and industrial electronics, machining and tooling base
- Gujarat
- Solar panel manufacturers, module plants and growing cell capacity
Components and imports
Be realistic about your bill of materials. Many active components, connectors and specialty parts are still imported, mostly from East Asia. That shapes your project:
- Lead time: imported parts often add several weeks, and allocations can stretch it.
- Cost: duties, freight and currency movements end up in your unit price.
- Risk: one long-lead part can hold up a whole build.
Local sourcing is growing for passive components, PCBs, enclosures and some connectors. Ask which lines of your BOM can be sourced locally.
How to check an EMS supplier
- SMT lines: number of lines, placement capacity and age, and the board sizes they run.
- AOI and X-ray inspection: optical inspection for placement, X-ray for BGA and hidden joints.
- ISO 9001: a baseline. Ask for the current certificate and its scope.
- IPC-A-610 workmanship: which class they build to, and whether they have a certified trainer.
- ESD control: wrist straps, flooring, ionisation and regular audits.
- Traceability: lot and serial tracking from incoming parts to shipped units.
- BIS registration: products sold in India may need it. Check early if India is also your market.
What drives the price
- Volume: setup costs spread over the run, so small batches cost more per unit.
- BOM cost: imported parts, brands chosen and allocation status.
- Board complexity: layer count, fine-pitch parts, double-sided assembly.
- Test coverage: more test steps cost more, and reduce field failures.
- Compliance: BIS, RoHS and customer documentation add work.
Treat a very low quote as a question: it can hide part substitution or thin testing.

Questions about electronics manufacturing in India
How long does it take to start electronics production in India?
From a complete file package, a prototype often takes a few weeks. A pilot run and mass production usually add several more, depending on how many parts are imported.
Do I need an Indian company to work with an EMS provider?
Not always. Many providers export directly. Payment terms, duties and warranty handling can be simpler with a local partner on your side.
Can Indian suppliers build to IPC Class 3?
Some can. Ask for evidence of Class 3 work and a certified IPC trainer before you assume it.
Can foreign buyers source solar modules in India?
Yes. Gujarat and other states host module plants that export. Check the certifications your destination market requires.
