Metal parts manufacturing in India: a guide for buyers
India makes metal and plastic parts to your drawing, at a cost that often sits below Western Europe and North America, with full supply chains for casting, forging, machining, sheet metal and molded plastics. What decides your outcome is the supplier you pick and how you check it, not the process. This guide is part of contract manufacturing in India.
In short
- India covers casting, forging, CNC machining, sheet metal and injection molding, often within one cluster.
- Most work sits in a few clusters, so choosing a supplier is partly choosing a region.
- ISO 9001 is common, IATF 16949 is narrower: the scope of the certificate matters more than the logo.
- Price follows material, tolerance, volume, tooling and inspection level.

Processes India does well
- Investment casting and other castings: pumps, valves, automotive and instrument parts. Sand and gravity die casting are widely available. Plan a machining allowance: castings are less precise than machined parts.
- Forging: forging companies in India range from job shops to plants supplying automotive and energy. Ask for heat treatment records, not only the shape.
- CNC machining: turning, milling and multi-axis work. Many shops run older machines next to newer ones: ask for the machine list with models and ages.
- Sheet metal and metal fabrication: laser cutting, punching, bending, welding and finishing. The most crowded segment, where capacity and repeatability vary the most.
- Plastic injection molding: tooling, molding and assembly. Moving your existing mold is possible after a fit check. Resin grade and drying control often decide part quality.
Where metal and plastic parts are made in India
| Cluster | Typical strength |
|---|---|
| Pune | Automotive, machining, forging, castings |
| Chennai | Automotive, sheet metal, stamping, molding |
| Coimbatore | Castings, pumps, machining |
| Bengaluru | Precision machining, aerospace and electronics parts |
| Ahmedabad and Rajkot | Castings, machining, general engineering |
| Faridabad and Gurgaon | Sheet metal, automotive components |
| Mumbai area | Fabrication, castings, port access |
| Ludhiana | Fasteners, forgings, bicycle and auto parts |
The cluster also sets your freight and lead time: ask which port your supplier normally ships from.
How to check a parts supplier
- Factory visit: in person or a live video walk. Look at the shop floor, not the showroom.
- Machine list: models, ages, capacity and maintenance, matched to your tolerances and part sizes.
- Certifications: ISO 9001 as a baseline, IATF 16949 for automotive. Read the scope on the certificate.
- Inspection reports: dimensional reports, material certificates, hardness or NDT results from recent jobs.
- First article inspection: a ballooned drawing with measured values, before any volume run.
A certificate proves a system exists. It does not prove the shop can hold your tolerance on your part.
What drives the price of a part
- Material: grade, mill source and certificates. Imported grades cost more than local ones.
- Tolerance and finish: tight tolerances and fine finishes add machining time and scrap.
- Volume: small runs spread setup costs over few parts.
- Tooling and fixtures: molds, dies and fixtures are often quoted separately, as a one-time cost.
- Inspection level: full dimensional reports and third-party inspection add cost and days.
- Logistics: Incoterms, packing and port choice change the landed cost.

Send a complete package (2D drawing, 3D model, material specification, quantities, inspection requirements). A serious supplier flags tolerance, draft angle or casting issues before quoting.
Questions about metal parts manufacturing in India
How long does a first order of parts take?
Often 4 to 10 weeks from approved drawing to shipment, depending on tooling and process. Casting and molding usually take longer than machining, because of the tools.
Do I need to visit India?
Not always. A live video walk, a machine list and a first article inspection cover much of the risk. A visit helps on larger or higher-risk orders.
Is ISO 9001 enough?
It is a starting point. For automotive work, ask for IATF 16949. For medical or aerospace parts, ask for the relevant sector standard and audit records.
Can one supplier make both metal and plastic parts?
Some can, many cannot. If your assembly mixes both, check whether one partner coordinates the work or whether you will manage two suppliers.
